Listen to Ellen DeGeneres: Don't Think You Can Get Away Without Flossing!

In a recent video on her YouTube channel, Ellen DeGeneres talks about the importance of flossing. She says that once you get used to flossing, you “won’t want to not do it.” Flossing is one of the most important things you should do every day. It helps to prevent cavities and gum disease. It can also help prevent bad breath due to food particles that get stuck in between your teeth. It is an essential part of the oral hygiene routine.

Flossing is the act of cleaning between the teeth using a long piece of string or yarn-like material known as a “toothbrush.” Bacteria that collect on the teeth and around the gums can cause tooth decay and gum disease if not removed regularly. Proper flossing takes at least two minutes to complete, not including the time it takes to get to the bathroom and rinse off the floss afterward! Most people only spend about 15 seconds a day flossing. This lack of time can lead to serious oral problems down the road. Brushing alone cannot fully clean the teeth, which is why flossing is so important.

To floss properly, take a piece of floss approximately 18 inches long and wind it around your two pointer fingers. Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and the sides of your index fingers. Gently slide the floss between each tooth using a sawing motion. Repeat this process on every space between your teeth, taking care to move gently along the gum line and not snap the floss into your gums. When brushing is complete, rinse the mouth vigorously with water to help remove any leftover particles of food. Don’t forget to replace your toothbrush every three to four months, as well!

Practicing good oral hygiene habits like proper flossing and regular dental visits can help to prevent cavities and painful infections in the mouth. Floss daily, brush twice daily, and visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning to keep a healthy smile for life!

The next time you see Ellen DeGeneres on TV, see the big smile on her face as she cheers her audience on to brush and floss their teeth. Her own oral hygiene routine consists of brushing in the morning and night and flossing before bedtime. She takes care of her teeth by maintaining a diligent routine of brushing, flossing, and rinsing with water after drinking coffee or tea. This helps to prevent stains from forming on the surface of your enamel. She also has a professional cleaning every six months to maintain optimal oral health. But most importantly, she spreads the good word about staying on top of your oral health!
