Dental Care Early in Life can Impact Oral Health in our Later Years

The baby teeth are placeholders, but they are still important to the development of a healthy adult smile. They help children chew and speak correctly and serve as guides for the eruption of permanent teeth. Caring for baby teeth is just as important as caring for the permanent set because decay or disease in baby teeth can cause problems with the eventual eruption of adult teeth.

The shape of baby teeth also impacts the development of the jaws and face. When a child loses a baby tooth too early, the adult teeth may not grow in properly. A space maintainer may be necessary to keep the other teeth straight while waiting for the adult teeth to come in.

Treatment Options Available for Young Children

A child's first teeth begin to develop before birth but typically begin to erupt through the gums around six months of age and continue to appear until approximately age three. It is important to establish good dental care habits as early as possible and give children a head start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

At pediatric dental appointments, our dentists and team provide oral health exams and cleanings for children to help your child get a good start on developing strong oral hygiene habits. These routine visits also provide an opportunity for our team to look for and address any potential problems with the teeth and jaw while they are still easy to treat. Cavities are the number one childhood disease affecting oral health; because early treatment can prevent additional issues from developing or becoming worse.

If a child has a cavity or other issue with their tooth, this should be treated with traditional dental fillings and composite resin fillings. Our team is trained to provide these restorations in a way that provides children with a comfortable experience. In situations where a tooth is too damaged to be restored with a filling or crown, it may be best to consider extracting it. Primary teeth serve an important function during the first few years of a child's life, but after they fall out, they do not need to continue serving a purpose in the mouth.

Importance of Early Dental Care

While dental care is important for people of all ages, it can have a significant impact on adult teeth. Cavities are one of the most common issues found in adult patients. Dentists often recommend children get their first comprehensive cleanings before the age of three. For babies who are teething, a dentist may recommend a fluoride treatment or sealant to prevent decay. These preventive treatments can help your child avoid cavities and other common oral health problems. Regular appointments with the dentist can help them learn how to care for their teeth. This can prevent the need for intensive dental procedures later in their life. As a result, regular dental care can actually save you money in the long run.

The earlier you bring your child to see us, the better their chances are at avoiding future tooth decay and gum disease. We also recommend scheduling an appointment for your baby after they have been weaned and are eating solid foods.
