3 Things You can do to Slow Tooth Wear

Posted by Gannon Lee on Jun 13 2021, 09:42 PM

Tooth erosion occurs when the enamel or the protective outer layer of the tooth gets worn away over time. This exposes the inner layer or dentin and makes it prone to sensitivity and tooth decay. Tooth erosion can be prevented by practicing certain healthy habits. Here are a few practices that can help prevent the wear and tear of the teeth:

Stop or Reduce the Consumption of Acidic Foods and Drinks

Acidic foods and beverages can cause erosion of the enamel on your teeth. The enamel is the hard outer layer that protects your teeth from decay and damage. Without this protective layer, you are more prone to developing cavities, sensitivity, and other oral issues. To reduce tooth wear caused by acidic foods, try to avoid or limit the consumption of the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Citrus fruits
  • Sports drinks
  • Coffee
  • Processed meats

Wear a Night Guard or Bite Splint

Do you know teeth grinding or bruxism can erode your teeth and cause your teeth to be worn-down? The most important thing you can do is wear a nighttime guard or splint to prevent unconscious teeth from grinding and clenching. When you grind your teeth in your sleep, it can cause fractures, enamel erosion, and even tooth loss. A night guard or splint will help protect your teeth and prevent them from wearing down further.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist twice a year for a checkup and routine cleaning. This biannual appointment can help to prevent further damage and identify any potential problems early so treatment can be less invasive. These regular visits also give us a chance to monitor your oral health and offer helpful tips for preventing common issues in the future.

Regular checkups allow us the opportunity to identify problems in their early stages before they become too serious and cause severe damage to your smile. For example, cavities are small areas of decay that develop when plaque is allowed to sit for too long on the surface of your teeth. Cavities can worsen over the years until they are eventually deep enough to require restorative dentistry treatments such as fillings or crowns. Proactively treating them during a checkup is much easier and less expensive for you in the long run.

Preventive care plays an important role in maintaining good oral health. Please call our office to schedule your next visit with us!
